This was the only time all the children of James and Catherine Boyd were home together.

1848-1854 Elizabeth attended grade school in Elkhart twp.Noble Co., In.
1854- Oct Moved with parents to Clay twp., Lagrange co., In on a farm about 5 miles west of LaGrange and North of the old Saylor Schoolhouse

1855- She did housework to earn money to go to college.
1867  Attended the Collegiate Institute at Ontario, In.Taught school until her marriage.
1867- Elizabeth and Cary Frisbey lived in Noble Co., In
1868- In the Spring of 1868 They moved to a farm 4 1/2 miles west of LaGrange, In. on the Baubaga Road.They lived at first in a log house and cleared the land. Later built a frame house. 
1905  On Jan. 5 they moved into a new frame house which was built a short distance in front of the old one. They lived here the rest of their lives.
1917  Oct 27  They celebrated their Golden Wedding  Anniversary, at the farm home but due to Cary's health did not have a reception as earlier planned. Their children and their families were home.  Also,Mrs. Fletcher Call (Nina McCourtie, Dau of Delilah Boyd McCourtie) and her son Lyle.

Elizabeth as a young girl at home attended with her parents the German Baptist (Dunkard) Church and was a life long member.


She did a great amount of public speaking for church and school and Old Settler Meetings.


Their home was a refuge for those less fortunate, relatives and friends, and they were always ready to lend help in sickness and sorrow to those in the neighborhood. Elizabeth made a home for her niece, Delilah, and for her
father in his declining years.

 

CARY R. FRISBEY came to Noble County with his parents in 1842, and in 1844 moved to Lima Township, this county. His father, John Frisbey, was born in Luzerne County, Penn.; he was a soldier in the war of 1812, and was married in June, 1817, to Mary A. Van Clief, a native of Morgan County, Ohio. She died at her home in Lima Township, in November, 1854; Mr. Frisbey then moved to this township, where he died in October, 1859.

C.R. Frisbey was born February 2, 1836, in Morgan County, Ohio. He went to Wisconsin in 1855, returning to this county the following year.

September 30, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Forty-fourth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and was in battle at Fort Donelson. Being unfit for service he was discharged July 17, 1862, at Battle Creek, Tenn., and returned to La Grange. September 30, 1864 Mr. Frisbey re-enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Forty-second Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the battle at Nashville. July 6, 1865, they were mustered out at Nashville, and Mr. Frisbey returned to Indiana.

In 1864, April 2, he was married to Julia F. Osborn, who died September 22, 1864.

He married Miss Elizabeth Boyd October 27, 1867, a native of Noble County, and bought the farm where he now lives, in February, 1868. They have two children - Erie S. and Minnie M.

Mr. Frisbey is a member of the Free-Will Baptist Church, and Mrs. Frisbey of the German Baptist. He was Deputy County Treasurer for about nine years, and six years served as Assessor and Real Estate Appraiser; he now fulfills the duties as Justice of the Peace, to which office he was elected in June, 1879.

Mr. Frisbey has taught sixteen terms of school, and has conducted a singing school for twenty-three years; for five years he was local correspondent of the La Grange Standard, and has written two years for the La Grange Register.

Foster Daughter Delilah Boyd (further information on Delilah under Eston) daugher of Sarah (Frisbey) & Eston Boyd She was a niece and foster daughter, her mother being a sister of Cary Frisbey and her father a bother of Elizabeth (Boyd) Frisbey. She lived with her Aunt and Uncle from the time she was 7 until she was 17 years old. She was always considered as a sister by the Frisbey children. She also made it her home in later years.

Phyllis Franke Brown
May 17, 1916-March 6, 1998

Granger -- Phyllis Franke Brown, 81 of Timberland Drive, Granger, Indiana, died shortly before sunrise on Friday morning, March 6, at the Holy Cross Care Facility in South Bend, Indiana.

She was born on May 17, 1916 to Henry E. and Frances (Frisbey) Franke, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

On June 28, 1943, in Grand Rapids, she married James W. Brown, who preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Brown was also preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Dorothy Petrilli; and by three cousins.

She grew up in Grand Rapids and then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She received a BA in June 1938, and an MA in August 1939 in Speech pathology and audiology. She worked as a speech clinician in the Grand Rapids Public Schools, The School City of South Bend and the South Bend Community School Corporation, retiring in 1968. Mrs. Brown was instrumental in developing the first program of speech and hearing services in the South Bend schools, stated in the 1940s.

She was a longtime member of The First Presbyterian Church of South Bend and was a charter member of Presbyterian Players. She ws a life member of the American Speech Language Hearing Association and of the Indiana Speech Language Hearing Association. She was active in Southhold Restorations historic preservation organization, and she also contributed volunteer work as a tutor for the Literacy Council. In May 1996 Phyllis Brown was honored at a special awards ceremony, receiving an honorary recognition placque from the Michiana Speech Language Hearing Association for her years of service to individuals with communications disorders.

She is survived by a son David M., a daughter, Judith Brown Richardson; and by two newphews, three nieces, four gr nephews, four gr nieces and two cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, at Welsheimer's (North) Funeral Home. There will be visitation with the family from 6 to 8 pm. on Friday evening, March 20, and also for one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Cremation will take place and burial will be private, at Highland Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Hope Rescue Mission in South Bend; to the Redbud Community Retreat Camp, C/O The Frst Presbyterian Church of South Bend; to Pet Refuge, Inc., in Mishawaka; or to the charity of donor's choice.
 

James W. Brown

GRANGER- James W. Brown, 80, of Timberland Dive, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Regency Place. MR. Brown retired in 1978 from Bendix Corp. as design/product engineer in the aircraft landing gear department after 36 years of service. He was born August 10, 1915, in Kansas City, MO and had lived in South Bend since 1943. On June 28, 1943, in Grand Rapids, he married Phyllis E. Franke. She survivies with a daughter, Judith E. Brown Richardson; a son, David M.; and a sister Jane Thurber of Sun City, Az. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bendix Senior Management Club, and University of Iowa Alumni Association, and was a charter member of Presbyterian Players. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa and a volunteer for the blood bank and MEals on Wheels for many years.
Memorial Services will be at a later date. Cremation will take place. Welsheimer funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions ay be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc. or any charity.
