Married Carrie Belle Durst
Newspaper article announcing their marriage
A very pretty wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Durst at New Germany, at which time Miss Carrie Belle Durst and Mr. Freeman Francis Garlitz of Avilton, Garrett County, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. After the ceremony had been performed, the happy young couple were tendered a supper and reception by the bride's parents, which was attended by a large circle of friends and relatives who extended congratulations and best wishes to the groom and his interesting little bride. After a short honeymoon spent among eastern cities and places of interest, the couple will return and make Avilton their future home. The Evening Times, Cumberland, June 23, 1905

"The history of the Freeman and Carrie Garlitz family is an unhappy one. All of their children were hemophiliacs except one, Pauline. Mary, Nancy, and Joseph died in infancy. Lawrence bled to death from a straw running up his nose while playing the barn. Martha had hundreds of transfusions in her life time. After her first husband's death in a tragic automobile accident, she married again and moved to Ohio with her second husband Eugene, where she died from bleeding. At the age of fifteen me and my brother Gerald gave her blood. I have always had a feeling there was something wrong about her death. Lemuel also lived a precarious life, having many close calls from these bleeding spells. At the age of 65 he went to the hospital to have his teeth pulled. When the doctor pulled them all, which any doctor should have known better, of course he bled to death. .... Where this disease of the blood comes from I don't know. My mother and Carrie always said it came from the Durst line of the family, whether it was a Durst or someone married into the family. But who knows about these things. It is easy to blame this one or the next one, but I surely wouldn't know about how this disease works. Carrie's one arm was useless all her life, but she could bake, churn, do anything that any other house\wife did for her family. She was like a second mother to most of us children."
