A Few Breig Family Records

Ellen Brieg, wife of Joseph Garlitz, was relations of the McKenzies and Weimers often found in the Garlitz family tree.

"My grandmother was Clara Emma MCKENZIE, youngest daughter of Joseph McKenzie and Margaret Klingaman. Clara married George F. BREIG, son of Ambrose BREIG and brother to the Elizabeth Rose BREIG who married Ozias WEIMER. Joseph McKenzie's sister was Drucilla MCKENZIE who was the mother of Osias WEIMER. There weren't that many people in the area then...and fewer Catholics." Betty Smith

Ferdinand Breig Obituary

FERDINAND BREIG
Mr. Ferdinand BREIG, one of Salisbury's oldest and most respected citizens, died at 6 o'clock, Tuesday evening at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Joseph GARLITZ in West Salisbury. The deceased was afflicted with dropsy, but his case was not considered dangerous until a few days before his death. He died very suddenly.

Mr. BREIG was a very good, kind-hearted old man and he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was born in Germany, we believe, but lived in Salisbury all his life. In religion he was a Lutheran, by occupation a carpenter. He was in every way a model citizen. Had he lived until May, he would have reached his four score years. Funeral today, conducted by Rev. E.S. Johnston.

FERDINAND BREIG died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Joseph GARLITZ, West Salisbury, on the evening of March 20, 1900, of dropsy of the heart. He complained only a few days when death came quickly; this sudden death was a great shock to his many friends. He was born in Baden, Germany, May 15, 1820 and came to this country while a child with his parents; they lived in New York about two years, then came to Greenville and from thence to Salisbury where he was married young in life to Miss Phoebe Ann Tedrow, who still survives him, as also his daughters, Mrs. Ellen Garlitz, of West Salisbury, Miss Rebecca at home, Mrs. Nina Billmeyer, of Virginia; a son and a daughter preceded him to the spirit world. He was a kind, honest and industrious man, had a kind word for all and his familiar face will long be missed by the good people of Salisbury where he spent the greater part of his life. He was the youngest son of Joseph and Maria BREIG of happy memory, and is survived by his brother Daniel who is in the ripe age of 83 years. Their brother Ambrose precede him by 15 years to the eternal world at the age of 70 years. Funeral on Thursday 22d by his pastor Rev. Johnston. Peace be to his ashes.

"To every life there comes a close,
Be it of toil or pleasure or pain,
The night whose morning no man knows
Will fold the hands whose work is done.
For whom eternity's long tomorrow
Shall bear no burden of pain or sorrow
For work unfinished and counted as naught.
