Theodore Henry Garlitz

It is important to note that some records have this Henry Theodore listed as the son of John and Mary Garlitz while others have him as the son of 1805 Henry. Further information is sought.

At some point Theodore Henry abandoned his wife and family. It is possible that he re-married. Records have a Theodore H. marrying a Jennie Stemple in 1890.

Tom: I think I have it right as my Father was very sure of the fact that his Grandfather Henry was a Methodist Preacher and was married to a Choctaw Indian maid. I have no records of any of Henry Theodore's siblings, but I'm sure there were some. Also Henry Theodore left his wife Elizabeth in 1888, the year my father was born and this is for sure. So it looks like the Theodore H. Garlitz who married Jennie Stemple are one and the same. He just reversed his name because he never got a divorce from Elizabeth. I'm sure of all the spellings as my father was very devoted to his Mother and cared for her till she passed away, because he was the only child that she kept, all others were given to the orphans home and then distributed to different farms and homes, almost like servants. Married Jennie Stemple who, according to David Garlits, descendent, was born in 1857 in WVA. They had 8 children, five who were living in 1900.

Under the very clear "Jennie Stemple" there is a very faded "Jacob _______". I played around with the picture using different colors and it seems to say "Garlits" (with an s?)... So this photo was owned by Jennie Stemple, but it's clearly a picture of a boy or young man named Jacob. The studio was in Conshohocken Pa.? Photo taken @ 1890. David Garlits

Additional Notes on Christopher Columbus Garletts. Because of deep poverty, the family was split up and Christopher Columbus Garletts was given up to a family of farmers when he was very young. According to his daughter Nanne it was a large family. He spelled his last name GARLETTS, but according to the 1880 Fayette County census the family name is actually GARLITZ. His daughter Nanne referred to an "Uncle Bill" who spelled his name GARLITZ. On Christopher's social security application his father's name is listed as Henry Garlett, with no "s".

C. C. Garletts operated a real estate and insurance firm in Brownsville, PA for a number of years. He was a justice of the peace in Brownsville, for 20 years, a charter member of the Brownsville Fire department, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. After the death of his first wife in 1934 he moved to Florida, as his social security application dated June 4, 1937 shows him living in Winter Park, FL.

Update on the identity of Christopher's mother: Christopher's SSA indicates his mother is Elizabeth Lindsey; I also ordered Edward Elmer's (supposedly his brother?) SSA, and he lists his mother as Eliza Ann Eicher. They both list their father as Henry Garletts, although Christopher spells the name Garlett, and Edward spells his father's name as Henry Garlits.
